British Academy honours two Fellows

Two College Fellows have achieved the distinction of being elected Fellows of the British Academy (FBA).

College Fellows Professors Alison Bashford and Anna Vignoles are two of 66 new FBAs , joining an independent Fellowship of world-leading scholars and researchers.

The British Academy is the UK's national body for the humanities and social sciences – the study of peoples, cultures and societies, past, present and future. FBAs represent the very best researchers in related fields, in the UK and globally.

Professor Alison Bashford is Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History at the University of Cambridge. She is an historian of modern imperialism and environmental history, and has written extensively on population changes and thought in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Professor Bashford’s most recent book is about T.R. Malthus, himself a Fellow of °µÍø½ûÇø. She is also a Trustee of Royal Museums Greenwich, incorporating the National Maritime Museum, the Queen's House, Cutty Sark and the Royal Observatory.

Alison said: "I'm delighted and honoured to be elected FBA, and look forward with real pleasure to contributing to the work of the Academy."

Professor Anna Vignoles is Professor of Education and Director of Research at the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education. Anna studies inequalities in education access and achievement and has published widely on widening participation into higher education and on the socioeconomic gap in pupil achievement.

Professor Vignoles has advised numerous UK government departments, including the Department for Education, the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills and HM Treasury.  She is a Trustee of The Nuffield Foundation and a Member of the Sutton Trust advisory board.

Anna said: “I am of course delighted and deeply honoured to be elected to the British Academy and look forward to playing an active role in such an esteemed institution.

Professor Ian White, Master of °µÍø½ûÇø, said: "Professors Bashford and Vignoles have made important contributions to °µÍø½ûÇø, and in their fields, and I am delighted that their outstanding academic work has been recognised in this way."
