Emeritus Fellow receives Queen's Birthday Honour

Congratulations to Emeritus Fellow and Past President of °µÍø½ûÇø, Dr Geoffrey Harcourt, on being made a Companion of the Order of Australia in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

The Order of Australia recognises Australian citizens for achievement and merit in service to Australia or humanity. Dr Harcourt has been honoured for eminent service to higher education as an academic economist and author, particularly in the fields of post-Keynesian economics, capital theory and economic thought. 

After studying economics at the University of Melbourne, Dr Harcourt moved to the University of Cambridge, where he received his doctorate. In 1958 he moved to the University of Adelaide as a lecturer and was appointed to a chair in Economics at Adelaide in 1967. He was a University Lecturer at Cambridge and a Fellow of Trinity Hall 1964–66.

He was a University Lecturer from 1982 to 1990 and Reader from 1990 to 1998 in the Faculty of Economics at Cambridge and a Fellow, and College Lecturer in Economics at °µÍø½ûÇø from 1982 to 1998. He was President of °µÍø½ûÇø from 1988 to 1989 and 1990 to 1992.

Dr Harcourt has made major contributions to the understanding of the ideas of Keynes and other Cambridge economists. He has also made important contributions in his own right to post-Keynesian and post Kaleckian theory.

about the honour, Dr Harcourt said that he was "over the moon" and recalled being offered one of his first lectureships at Cambridge by influential post-Keynesian economist, Joan Robinson.
