Meet our new Editor
Kate Coghlan recently joined the College as Editor of Publications. We sat down with Kate to find out a bit more about her and her role.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I’ve managed communications in different sectors, including at Lucy Cavendish College. My favourite activity has always been writing and editing. In addition to this role, I’m studying for an MA in Creative and Life Writing at Goldsmiths University (my first short story will be published this summer). I am a Non-Executive Board Director for the Paralympic sport and disability charity, Goalball UK.
What drew you to °µÍø½ûÇø?
As a freelance consultant, I helped to research and write the Sustainability Strategy for the College. I spoke with students, staff and Fellows and was impressed by everyone’s passion for the project and their love for the College. This role was the perfect opportunity to join an exciting community.
What will you be doing in this role?
I’ll be responsible for managing the production of the College’s two main publications: the Annual Report and Jesuan News. I’ll research, commission, write and edit articles to show highlights of the work carried out here. I’ve started by meeting people and asking lots of questions. This role gives me an excuse to be nosy every day.
Tell us something not many people know about you?
I have a Diploma from the Wines and Spirits Education Trust and have visited vineyards around the world, so you should always pass me the wine list!
Last book you read?
I’m a member of two book clubs and one recently chose to read A Terrible Kindness by Jo Browning-Wroe, who lives in Cambridge and was my first creative writing teacher. One section is about choristers, and really captures the atmosphere of a Cambridge chapel. The story is incredibly moving (you’ll need a box of tissues at hand).
What would be the title of your autobiography?
No time for typos.
Best piece of writing advice?
I was told to read work aloud to myself to check it sounds correct. I often change the order of a sentence or paragraph after doing this, to make it flow better.
Best interview you have ever done?
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Professor Julian Dowdeswell about his career in glaciology, just one of many reasons to look forward to the next Annual Report!
What should I do if I have a story for the Annual Report?
I’m always on the lookout for stories! Please email publications@jesus.cam.ac.uk
