Meet our new Head Gardener
Lee de Grammont recently joined the College as Head Gardener. We sat down with Lee to find out more about him and his plans for the College's grounds.
Tell us a bit about yourself
I joined °µÍø½ûÇø from the Cambridge University Sports Service, where I was the Grounds Manager at Fenner's Cricket and Tennis Ground, and Wilberforce Road Sports Ground. I also worked at Trinity Hall College prior to this. Some might think I'm Monty Don's number one fan, as my son is called Monty!
How did you get into gardening?
During my time at school I had work experience at Churchill College as a gardener/groundsperson, and I instantly fell in love with all things green. It also gave me the desire to work in a college community which are known for having beautiful settings, including grounds and gardens.
What’s your garden like at home?
A work in progress! Having a baby has meant that the garden design has been delayed, however it is my project for this summer. The gardens at Jesus have given me great inspiration for my garden at home.
Favourite plant for all seasons?
That's a hard one as there are so many that I adore! I'll go with Amelanchier Lamarckii for its all year round beauty.
Best gardens to visit?
I really enjoy visiting a variety of gardens to gain inspiration, but my favourite is the Old Vicarage at East Ruston in Norfolk. It has been designed really well with a variety of different planting styles and has fantastic vistas. I'd highly recommend a visit during May.
Favourite areas of the gardens at °µÍø½ûÇø?
The Master's Garden is the stand out area for me, as it has a mix of formal, herbaceous and natural planting. I am also blown away by the woodland area, with the variety of beautiful trees and shade-loving plants.
What’s your vision for the gardens at Jesus?
I am keen to enhance and introduce new planting schemes, to intensify the wow factor for members and visitors to the College, as well as promoting biodiversity.
