Oxford and Cambridge in harmony for Choral Classics concert

The renowned choirs of Merton College Oxford and °µÍø½ûÇø Cambridge joined together for a concert of choral favourites on Tuesday 7 July.

The choirs performed masterpieces including Tallis’s 40-part Spem in alium and music by Elgar, Tavener and Fauré in Merton College's beautiful Chapel.

This is the third year that the choirs have collaborated in this way, following a concert to launch the Muze Trust Charity in London in 2013. This concert was also in aid of the Muze Trust Charity, which supports music education and provision in Zambia.

The concert was directed by Benjamin Nicholas, Reed Rubin Organist and Director of Music at Merton College and Mark Williams, Director of Music at °µÍø½ûÇø. Benjamin said: “The annual concert with our friends from °µÍø½ûÇø Cambridge is a highlight of our year; we particularly enjoyed singing Tallis’s Spem in alium in the glorious acoustic of Merton chapel.â€

Mark said: “Music can bring such fulfilment and joy. The people who attended this concert not only had a fantastic evening, but they have also played a part in supporting Zambia’s cultural heritage and improving access to music education.â€
