Professor Alan Cuthbert
The Master and Fellows are saddened by the news that Professor Alan Cuthbert, Honorary Fellow, passed away on 27th August 2016. He was a Fellow of the College from 1968-1991 and in 1991 became an Honorary Fellow.
Professor Cuthbert was the Master of Fitzwilliam College from 1991-1999. He was also the first University Teaching Officer in Pharmacology, appointed when the Department was established in 1963. Over his time in the Department it grew significantly, with much of this growth occurring during his 20 years as Head.
His most tangible legacy will probably prove to be the building in Tennis Court Road, which houses the Department and which was opened in 1989. Professor Cuthbert was pivotal in negotiations with the University and beyond and in fundraising to achieve the goal of a new building in the centre of Cambridge. Following his retirement and until only recently he continued to be active in research, with a base in the Department of Medicine.
