Siân Dutton is Professor of Physics and Solid State Chemistry, and a Director of Studies in Natural Sciences at °µÍø½ûÇø.
Academic interests
Siân Dutton's academic interests include:
- Condensed matter physics
- Solid state chemistry – synthesis and characterisation of inorganic materials.
Degrees obtained
- BA Hons, Natural Science: Chemistry, °µÍø½ûÇø, University of Cambridge.
- MA Cantab, °µÍø½ûÇø, University of Cambridge.

Biography
Siân was an undergraduate in Cambridge, completing a MSci in Natural Sciences with a Part III in Chemistry. She then went to Oxford to complete a DPhil in the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory under the supervision of Professor Peter Battle. There she studied the synthesis and characterisation of mixed metal oxides with a focus on understanding their magnetic properties.
Siân then moved to Princeton University to work with Professor Bob Cava as part of the collaborative Institute of Quantum Matter with Johns Hopkins University. In Princeton she worked on geometrically frustrated magnets.
In 2012 Siân moved back to Cambridge joining the Cavendish Laboratory as a Winton Advanced Research Fellow working on functional energy materials. In October 2015 Siân was appointed as a University Lecturer in the Physics Department and in early 2016 her group moved into new laboratories within the Maxwell Centre.
