Biography
Stephen Barton was an undergraduate at °µÍø½ûÇø from 1965 to 1968. He joined a City law firm, Herbert Smith, in 1969 and eventually became a partner there, specialising initially in insolvency law, then major projects including many oil-related matters, the Channel Tunnel, a number of private finance initiative projects, and the privatisation of the electricity industry.
He took early retirement from that position in 1997 because of the serious illness of his wife and returned to °µÍø½ûÇø, initially as a Fellow Commoner, to teach Law (equity and company law) as a supervisor. After the death of his wife in 1998, he accepted an invitation to become the Senior Bursar, and Fellow, a position he held from 1999 until he retired in 2007; during that period he continued to teach.
On his retirement, he became an Emeritus Fellow, and was responsible for editing the College’s Annual Report for a number of years. He remarried (in the College Hall) in February 2005.
